Ballast Point Calico Amber Ale ....

Tonight I will have a Calico Amber Ale from Ballast Point Brewing Company.  Twelve ounce bottle.  Their web site lists 5.5% ABV and 45 IBUs.

This amber ale poured with a medium to thick head, which was somewhat tan in color.  Beer color is amber/copper, and the beer is very clear.  The aroma has a little citrus/piney note to it, some caramel-like sweetness, and a fruity/floral note as well.  Very interesting aroma.  The taste has good malt, which transitions to some bitterness - more bitterness than you usually get in an amber ale.  I am also getting a floral note at the finish.  Very little aftertaste - just a little bitter.  The Ballast Point web site says this beer was inspired by traditional English ESBs, and I think the malty and hoppy flavor profile fits that better than what most people think of as an amber ale.  Very enjoyable.
