Kona Koko Brown ....

A friend posted about this beer today on Facebook.  I had actually picked one up earlier in the day, so I thought I would go ahead and sample it tonight.  It is a Koko Brown - Nut Brown Ale, from Kona Brewing Company.  This beer is brewed with toasted coconut.  Twelve ounce bottle.  The Kona web site shows 5.5% ABV and 28 IBUs.  It also says this beer is a Winter/Spring release.

Koko Brown poured with a medium, tan colored head.  The beer color is a medium brown, with a little copper.  The toasted coconut comes through very clear in the aroma.  I also get hints of chocolate.  Medium bodied.  There are some malts in the taste, as you would expect from a brown ale, but the coconut hits quickly and runs pretty strongly through the entire sip.  Just a little bitterness.  Somewhat dry finish, with a slight coconut aftertaste.

  1. Cool write-up. I'm a big fan of the Kona Wailua Wheat (http://bit.ly/H6qIdT) and this one did not disappoint.

Part of the lure for me in drinking Kona beer is imagining I'm actually in Hawaii. Somehow I feel that drinking beers like this one somehow gets me closer to a place I'd rather be.

Did you notice the inside of the bottle cap? Its a Hawaiian word. So the more of this beer your drink, the more Hawaiian you will learn. Impractical? Yes. Cool? Absolutely.

  2. Thanks. I will have to try the wheat as well. I did not notice the cap, so I will remember when I try another Kona to look for it.
